Storytelling in Homer’s Odyssey

Tall Tales Things need not have happened to be true. Tales and adventures are the shadow truths that will endure when mere facts are dust and ashes and forgotten. –Neil Gaiman The escapades of wily Odysseus are ingrained into the hearts of countless children. The bedtime story of one man’s journey home and the obstacles he faces along the way forever lives on in youthful imagination. Alas, a problem arises when mythology-loving children grow up. Vocabulary and comprehension matures slowly over time, and, at some point, the youth is ready to delve into the feast that is Homer’s unabridged poetry.As the reader devours book after book of The Odyssey, he or she finds comforting familiarity in the stories, the characters, and the monsters, but something is not quite right. While hearing of Odysseus’ adventures as a child, the action was spoken from the steady voice of a omnipresent narrator, but in Homer’s work, the poet often speaks through Odysseus as a storyteller recounting his glorious past. This is when the disillusioned youth comes to a devastating conclusion: Odysseus is a liar.Homer distances himself as the poet from the more fantastic tales that the reader recognizes from youth: the Lotus eaters, the Laestrygonians, the Cyclops, Scylla and Charybdis, Circe, Aeolus and the winds. All these wondrous tales are told from the deceitful, crafty mouth of Odysseus. To the Phaeacians, he is a illustrious adventurer ready for derring-do at all times. To the knowing Athena, he claims to be a Cretan fugitive. And to Eumaeus and Telemachus, he in all his craftiness asserts that he is (while still a Cretan) a beggar who fought alongside the great Odysseus on the Trojan shore.Odysseus adopts these facades for different motives, but the response to his stories are unanimously positive. Through his stories, Odysseus does not sacrifice his integrity, rather he gains honor. When the eager reader reaches Book IX, he or she reaches some of th e most familiar events in Homer’s lore. Homer, through Odysseus’ account to the Phaecians, crafts some of the most thrilling action in the poem. Daring escapes, clever plans, and terrifying beasts are woven into a tapestry of wonder and enchantment. Yet for the great storyteller that he is, Odysseus s hesitant to relate his tale. â€Å"But now you wish to know my cause for sorrow / and thereby give me cause for more† (Homer 158). As exaggerated as the following account is, Odysseus seems to be truthful about his grief. Whether or not his men perished as he claims is not certain, but death was the end to their stories nonetheless. Odysseus honors the memory of these men by spinning a yarn so great that his men become immortal in his story. This does not, however, mean that he wishes to present his shipmates as faultless.He freely lays blame on the crew for releasing King Aeolus’ winds. By doing this, Odysseus proves his skill as a raconteur by showing manà ¢â‚¬â„¢s greedy nature and the consequences that are a result. Odysseus’ goal is not to raise himself up as the greatest of heroes either. He freely admits to his follies and to the deaths that heavy his heart with guilt. Odysseus confesses to his own human weaknesses saying, â€Å"Now, being a man, I could not help consenting† (189), when tempted by Circe to forgo his return home to Ithaca, putting his men in danger in the process.He even tells how one of his men, Eurylochus, blamed Odysseus for the death of his shipmates at the hands of the Cyclops, â€Å"That daring man! They died for his foolishness! † (190). He willingly admits to being overpowered by lust in the case of Circe, but he also tells of his tactical genius concerning the Sirens. Odysseus’ story is not a matter of boastfulness, rather a matter of honor, his own and that of his fallen comrades. Clearly, the Phaecians are satisfied with the narrative, â€Å"He ended it, and no one stirred o r sighed / in the shadowy hall, spellbound as they all were† (241).So impressed by the story and empathetic to Odysseus’ losses, in fact, that King Alcinous almost immediately loads his ship and has a Phaecian crew sail him back to Ithaca. The Phaecians are so entertained and enamored by Odysseus’ eloquence that they believe any word that flows from his lips, no matter how ludicrous. Odysseus does not set out to deceive his hosts, quite the opposite. When King Alcinous asks him to relate his travels, he does not want facts, he wants a story. After incurring the wrath of Poseidon one last time, Odysseus awakens on an Ithaca that he does not recognize thanks to Athena’s deviousness.When confront by the goddess in disguise, Odysseus â€Å"†¦ answered her / with read speech–not that he told the truth, / but, just as she did, held back what he knew, / weighing within himself at every step / what he made up to serve his turn† (250). After clai ming to be a Cretan fleeing his homeland after murdering a courier, Athena reveals herself to her favorite Odysseus. Then, surprisingly, she does not chastise him for lying, instead she praises him for his gift of deception, â€Å"Whoever gets around you must be sharp / and guileful as a snake; even a god / might bow to you in ways of dissimulation. You! You chameleon! † (251). Athena is not condoning Odysseus deceit, she is commending him. This prioritization of wit and cleverness over straight honesty is harder for modern readers to fully grasp than it would have been for the Greeks hearing the lovely recitation. Using the guise of a Cretan once more (fittingly because as the famous Cretan Epimenides once said, â€Å"All Cretans are liars,†) Odysseus tests the swineherd’s, Eumaeus’, loyalty and hospitality.Odysseus hints that Eumaeus’ master may be closer than he expects (263). In direct contrast to the Phaecians response, Eumaeus does not let hi mself believe the words of the stranger, how ever silver-tongued he may be. Eumaeus responds to the hidden Odysseus’ message of hope with pessimism concerning lonely Penelope, old Laertes, and absent Telemachus. In the manner of Greek hospitality, Odysseus and Eumaeus share a meal, wine, and stories, and while Eumaeus’ origin may not be as mythic as Odysseus, who is to say it is factual?His background is shared gracefully enough that even the esteemed Odysseus complements Eumaeus’ skill, â€Å"That was a fine story, and well told, / not a word out of place, not a pointless word† (275). When Telemachus returns, Odysseus carries on his charade. In the guise of a old beggar, Odysseus tests Telemachus’ valor saying, â€Å"If my heart were as young as yours, if I were / son to Odysseus, or the man himself, / I’d rather have my head cut from my shoulders / then to suffer the pestilence that is the suitors† (304).In rebuttal to this harsh in sult, Telemachus explains that Odysseus left him too young to prevent the suitors from swarming to Penelope. It is then that Athena deems it time to reveal Odysseus’ true form. This revelation and reunion is not only touching, but it also fills Telemachus with a pride and hunger to face the suitors. Odysseus disguised himself on Ithaca for almost four days before enacting revenge on the suitors who dishonor his home. Why would he wait so long? Why not burst through the doors right away and start cutting down men one by one?Odysseus never claims to be the strongest, the boldest, or even the bravest, but everyone knows that Odysseus is the wiliest. It is Odysseus, the master tactician and master of disguise, not a rage-filled berserker that reclaims his throne. It is safe to assume that Odysseus’ stories are not factual, but that in no way justifies the statement, â€Å"Odysseus is a liar. † His purpose in the story to the Phaecians is not to recount his travels v erbatim, rather he only wishes to convey the bravery of his men and the sadness in his heart. By the end of his tale, the hall is silent with grief.His reason for acting as a Cretan outlaw is not treachery, but an exercise in his great skill. He hides himself to his friends and family not out of malice, but so his intellectual stratagem banishes the suitors to Hades, not brute strength. Odysseus’s slyness and wit are to be admired, not admonished. When he announces his identity to the Phaecians, he does not cite his brute strength or skill in warfare as his gifts. He exclaims proudly, â€Å"I am Laertes’ son, Odysseus / Men hold me formidable for guile in peace and war: / this fame has gone abroad to the sky’s rim† (158).While heroes such as Achilles and Heracles establish their place in legend and eternity among Elysian fields with force and passion, Odysseus forever immortalized himself in the epics of the Ancients and the storybooks of children because of he is a â€Å"man of twists and turns† who knows how to tell a good story.Works Cited Gaiman, Neil. Distillation Lab Report

Data and Conclusions: The purpose of this experiment was to learn how to use distillation and gas chromatography to separate and identify different compounds from a given mixture. There are several kinds of distillation methods. However, the method that we used in this experiment was fractional distillation. This method is used when trying to separate two different volatile compounds whose boiling points differ by 40-50Â °C or more.If the boiling points are too close, this method will not work because the two compounds will begin evaporating at close temperatures and will condense down to the receiving flasks at relatively the same times. This will not create an ideal separation. The apparatus used for this type of distillation is longer than that of a simple distillation experiment because this kind of apparatus creates more efficient separation. This happens because the fractional distillation apparatus is longer, and allows for several simple distillations to occur within the col umn itself to more accurately separate liquids.The inside of the column is said to have theoretical plates, or equilibrium stages that are created by the vapor and liquid stages of a compound that create this accuracy. The column must also be insulated with cotton and aluminum to prevent any heat loss that may lead to inaccurate temperature readings or even effect the evaporation of the different compounds. When heating the stillpot, flameless heating should be used along with a magnetic stirbar. This is important to control the temperature of the mixture and keep the heat smooth and constant.Heating the mixture too fast could result in no fractionation in the column and lead to no separation. Likewise, if the mixture is heated too slowly, the vapors might now make it all the way to the condenser, and the liquid will fall back into the stillpot. If the mixture is heated correctly and constantly, the vapors should condense through a condenser and into a receiving flask. This condense r should have water running through it at all times to keep it cool and keep the condensed vapor flowing down into the receiving flask.As a whole, the entire apparatus works perfectly for two different volatile liquids with 40-50Â °C boiling point differences because as the liquid with the lower boiling point is distilled out, the higher boiling point liquid will remain in the stillpot as the other is evaporating and distilled. Then, it will be able to evaporate later as the temperature rises, after the other has more than completely distilled out. As I conducted this portion of the experiment, I noticed that while taking the three fractions, fraction A filled up the full 15 mL and continued distilling through fraction B, and eventually stopped.Because of this, I hypothesized that all of fraction A and most of fraction B consisted of the low boiling point compound. As I raised the temperature of the hotplate, I was able to collect fraction C, and I predicted that it was composed of mostly the high boiling point liquid. To test this, the experiment called for the use of gas chromatography. The chromatography would not only show the relative concentrations of each compound in the fraction, but could also help confirm the identification of the compounds we thought were in the fractions based on the temperatures that each liquid boiled.Before trying to guess the correct compounds of the mixture, one must run each individual fraction through the machine to clearly see the composition of each. Gas chromatography works because as the liquid runs through the machine, its different components run through and exit at different times due to changes of temperatures that measure high and low boiling points. The machine records these using peaks of retention time that identify these different components. After obtaining this data, there was enough information to choose a reasonable match for each of the components.Once both the fractions and the guessed compound were mixed , the retention recordings should not differ in the number of peaks because ideally the compound mixed should have the same retention time as one of the other previous peaks. If the compounds were to differ in the number of peaks, then it shows that another compound must be present with different properties. As I conducted this portion of the experiment, I guessed cyclohexane for my low boiling point liquid and toluene or heptane for my high boiling point liquid based on the fractional distillation observations.For cyclohexane I mixed it with fraction A, since it predominantly consisted of my low boiling point liquid, and observed two peaks in my results. Therefore I concluded that cyclohexane was the low boiling point liquid. However, for the second liquid I guessed heptane first, and my results showed three peaks. Knowing that I had guessed wrong, I tested toluene mixed with my fraction C and only got two peaks. The high boiling point liquid proved to be toluene. In conclusion, my results all matched the main ideas and theories presented in the experiment.From my results I was able to figure out the composition of each of the compounds in the initial mixture and compare them to those of the rest of the class. My results only varied by 3. 18%. When using the two different methods of calculating the composition, the second method using the chromatography peaks was more accurate, and compared to the first method of assuming the ideal compositions, the results differed from the class average by over 10%. Based on the consistency of our class results using the second method, the two compounds proved to have been distilled using the proper method, and is reinforced by the use of gas chromatography.

Similar to Liberation Christology Essay Until recently, traditional Christian theology was interpreted only by white males. In a modern world things are changing. In her book Consider Jesus, Elizabeth Johnson states that women â€Å"are waking up to their own dignity and finding their own voice† (page 97). Despite the feminist theology movement that Johnson describes, sexism and male dominance is embedded in the culture of the Catholic Church. Women will have equal rights under canon law, the problem is â€Å"Time†, the same thought process of 100 years ago is still active in the Church today. Only when the new generations of clergy is in place can change come. When it comes to the Christological interpretation woman voices can strengthen the debate, but it will take many generations for the old establishment to give way to an equal gender hierarchy. This is a strong argument, because in order for the old establishment to change and accept women, women need to make an effort to actively work to reform the current hierarchy. Johnson describes feminist theology as â€Å"Faith†¦being reflected upon explicitly from the perspective and experience of women† (page 97). Similar to Liberation Christology, in which poor and oppressed have a unique theological interpretation, in feminist theology the dominated group is women who begin to take part in the debate from their unique perspective. There are two main categories of feminist theology. The first is revolutionary feminist theology. As the word revolutionary implies these groups of women are quite radical and completely disassociate themselves with tradition rather than trying to change the minds of the male dominated theology. They do not acknowledge a male deity; instead they worship a female God, a goddess. They do not dwell on Jesus Christ because he was male. Usually these women split from the church and form their own groups arguing that the church is hopelessly stuck in its patriarchal ways. Johnson does not place much importance on these revolutionary feminists because this group has cut themselves off from the Church. The second category of feminist theology is reformist feminist theology. These women share the belief with the revolutionary feminists that there is a â€Å"male-dominated character of the Christian tradition† (p98), but instead of separating from the church, they choose to work from the inside to â€Å"seek the dismantling of the patriarchy and equal justice† (page 98). This approach could be described as â€Å"you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar†. Reformists work passively within the church to create change, not trying to dominate but with a view of the earth as shared, where â€Å"the dream of a new heaven and a new earth takes hold†¦ with no one group dominating and no one group subordinated, but each person in his or her own right participating according to their gifts, without preconceived stereotyping, in genuine mutuality† (page 99). The revolutionary theologians approach will ultimately lead to change, because as women are becoming more accepted in positions of power and authority outside of the church, they will become more accepted inside the church. The number of women in post-secondary education and federal government is higher than ever before. These are positive changes, but this kind of change in the church is still years away. Women are half of the human race yet seem to be overlooked in most of human history. The traditional patriarchal structure has defined women’s status and position in society. Reformists hope is to transform this traditional belief that women are second class citizens when in fact they have been just as influential in social as well as in Christological history. Mary Magdalene, the â€Å"apostle to the apostles† (109) and the other women of the Bible are â€Å"given several times in the gospels but have become a forgotten part of the story† (109). How is it that they were so important back then, yet so left out of the debate today? Perhaps our evolution as a male-dominated society has spilled over into the church – woman by no fault of their own were not allow to attend school or a higher level after high school, this alone caused a gap for woman in the church. The bible was written and interpreted by males while woman were denied economic, legal, and educational rights, â€Å"A prejudice is the inability to deal with the otherness of people who are different from what is considered â€Å"oneself†. In patterns of androcentric thinking the male is centered. These samplings are what influences canon law and has shaped Catholic tradition†. (p100 101) The consequence of sexism for woman is a lack of self-esteem and self-confidence; for men it is a narrow band of human characteristics; strong, rational, in control. (p 102) If the sexism could stop, society as a whole could benefit.

This business plan is to determine strategies that will eliminate the Human Resource position from Jay Morgan, so that he can reduce his travel time to all eight locations and to develop an HR department for the restaurants. Company Review The factors that cause many issues to the Castle’s Family restaurant business are having one individual with so many responsibilities. At the age of ten he was known to memorize the Quran and was proficient in arithmetics.During the next years he studied fiqh(islamic jurisprudence),linguistics,logic,euclidian geometry,philopsopy and The Almagest.He is said to be interested in and troubled with Aristotelean philosophy and metaphysics and overcame the troubles with the help of the book al-Ibane by another Persian philosopher Alpharabius and greatly influenced by him. After his fathers death, he left Buhara and went to get in the service of Qabus,ruler of Jurjan who was famous with his interest to education and taught logic and astronomy,also contined on writing Canon there.After the murder of the Qabus he continued on travelling around firstly going to Ray,a place near Teharan now, and then Hamada to cure the Amir Shamsud-Dawala to cure his colic and rewarded as being a prime minister for such a service. Avicennas days in Hamada went on busy and divided into two different jobs,being a prime minister and a scholar who gathered his students and taught medicine using his already finished two books Canon and newest one Kitab al-Shifa(means healing power in persian,also known as The Book of Healing in western civilizations). Those days ended after Amirs death.He hid himself in an apothecary and continued on his workd and teaching.At the same time Hamada was in war with Isfahan which was a city meaning more free environment and peace for Avicanna,so he secretly send letters to the important people of Isfahan,offering his services. The new Amir of Hamada got aware of this situation and Avicennas hiding place and put him into imprisonment. In time,Isfahan managed to capture Hamada and towns around it,after the war was over Avicenna returned to Hamada with Amir and continued on his studies for some time.One night,he escaped the city with his brother,a pupil and two slaves and went to Isfahan to be welcomed warmly by the Prince of Isfahan . Until his death,he remained in the service of the prince of Isfahan and offered his services to the Ala-al Daula the prince of Isfahan as his personal physician,literary and scientific adviser who accompanied him everywhere,including the military campaigns.As he was a chronic colic sufferer he lived his last years under great pain and refused to live moderately and allow himself to relax.He continued to accompany prince on his campaings and these were the places where made the Avicennas illness got stronger.He is said to be told that I prefer a short life with width to a narrow one with length. Essay 2 Psychoanalysis is the method of psychological therapy originated by Sigmund Freud in which free association, dream interpretation, and analysis of resistance and transference are used to explore repressed or unconscious impulses, anxieties, and internal conflicts (â€Å"Psychoanalysis†). This transfers to analyzing writing in order to obtain a meaning behind the text. There are two types of people who read stories and articles. The first type attempts to understand the plot or topic while the second type reads to understand the meaning behind the text. Baldick is the second type who analyzes everything. Since his article, â€Å"Allure, Authority and Psychoanalysis† discusses the meaning behind everything that happens in Mary Shelley’s â€Å"Frankenstein† we can also examine â€Å"The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas† in the same manner. â€Å"Allure, Authority, and Psychoanalysis† discusses the unconscious wishes, effects, conflicts, anxieties, and fantasies within â€Å"Frankenstein.† The absence of strong female characters in â€Å"Frankenstein† suggests the idea of Victor’s desire to create life without the female. This desire possibly stems from Victor’s attempt to compensate for the lack of a penis or, similarly, from the fear of female sexuality. Victor’s strong desire for maternal love is transferred to Elizabeth, the orphan taken into the Frankenstein family. This idea is then reincarnated in the form of a monster which leads to the conclusion that Mary Shelley felt like an abandoned child who is reflected in the rage of the monster. After reading the article by Baldick, I immediately thought of Ursula K. Le Guin’s â€Å"The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.† I was forced to read the story again having an open mind and the idea that everything has an alternative meaning. After doing so, I realized that it contains the same concept of abandonment and anger. In order to keep everything in Omelas prime and perfect one person has to be sacrificed. One child is kept in a broom closet in exchange for the splendor and happiness of Omelas. The people of Omelas know what is in the broom closet and, â€Å"they all understand that their happiness, the beauty of their city, the tenderness of their friendships, the health of their children†¦depend wholly on this child’s abominable misery† (Le Guin 216). Possibly Le Guin was an abandoned child who’s family was happy to see her in misery. This could le... ...ned in a boating accident. Abandonment seems to link her life together with the deaths of three children, her mother, her husband, and the suicide of her half-sister (Cliff Notes 2-3). The critical analysis of â€Å"Frankenstein† in Baldick’s article allowed a similar examination of â€Å"The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.† In the end I think it is safe to say that science fiction writing contains some of the authors own experiences whether directly or indirectly. The Use of Language in A Fable for Tomorrow by Rachel Carson The extracts give the impression of stark contrast, even contradictions, from the very beginning. The author chooses to use the word fable in the title, which, traditionally, is something fictional and also usually refers to the past and yet this is coupled with ‘tomorrow’. This indicates that the author is looking to show the reader that, although the situation she refers to in the second extract may not be factual in its entirety, it may not be long before it is. Carson uses graphical descriptions to convey the idea of harmony and peacefulness in the first paragraph ‘white clouds of bloom drifted above the green fields’. The author uses all of the senses to invite the reader to picture the scene more vividly. Carson uses language that suggests she has seen the subject matter on several occasions and knows it well, she describes how the scene changes from spring to autumn ‘oak and maple and birch set up a blaze of colour’ and then to winter ‘dried weeds rising above the snow’. How successful were the Liberal government in years 1906-1914 in bringing about political and institutional reform (24) The Liberal government of 1906-1914 under Bannerman and Asquith is one often recalled for its extensive reform of the welfare system in the United Kingdom. However, it was their political and constitutional reform which caused the most uproar, as they were arguably the most successful government of the 20th century in regards to changing the way Britain was governed.Their greatest achievement was the 1911 Parliament Act where they managed to get the Lords to sign a bill limiting their own power. When the Liberals came into power in 1906 the Conservatives held a startling majority in the House of Lords due to their representation of the wealthy and the landowners. This meant that if the Liberals wished to put forward and legislation or alter the constitution in which in which the Conservatives disagreed then the Lords could simply veto the decision whether or not the Commons agreed with it.This angered the Liberals, particularly Lloyd George who at the time needed to obtain ? 15’000’000 to go towards the welfare reforms and to new warships and planned to from the ‘Peoples budget’, which was tax this money from the rich. He believed this would gain support from the working classes by showing that they didn’t need to vote for socialists to have a say. The taxes were to increase the tax at over ? 3000 and ? 5000 and were to impose an inheritance tax of 20%. The Lords did veto this bill and so it led to the first general election of 1910.The Liberals claimed that the Lords were the selfish rich who weren’t willing to help the country, whereas the Conservatives tried to appeal to the wealthy stating that this would lead to social revolution and that is was the duty of the House of Lords to block controversial policy that the public hadn’t voted on. The Liberals won with a 2 seat majority and the suppor t of the Irish Nationalists who were hoping to obtain Home Rule through the Liberal government which led to the tax being passed.This Liberal win led to the second constitutional crisis where the Liberals pushed a bill which sought to remove the power of the House of Lords to veto bills and replace it with a power of suspensory veto, to delay a bill for 2 years – yet remove their power entirely to alter ‘money bills’. The Lords rejected this again which led to Asquith going to King Edward VII asking him to create more Liberal peers which he agreed to but died before he could bring this reality.His son King George V preferred a more consensual agreement between the two parties and this led to the 1910 constitutional conference where the conservatives offered to reform Lords powers, yet the Liberals rejected this and the conference ended in November which led to the second 1910 general election. Both parties obtained the most seats but again the Liberals were able to maintain government through their backing from the Irish Nationalist Party and Labour. The Commons passed the bill of reform in 1911 and it was eventually passed through the Lords when the Liberals and the Conservative ‘rats’ outvoted the ‘ditchers’ by 131 votes to 114.This limited the Lords powers but prevented the house from being swamped with new Liberal peers. This subject caused such division that Balfour was forced to resign leadership in 1911 which led to the Conservatives almost falling apart. All of this was a great success for the Liberals as it created a much more evenly democratic country as it meant that the elected House of Commons was now the true power of the country whereas the non-elected House of Lords had effectively lost all of its true power. Such was the effectiveness of this change; no attempt to further reform the Lords was made until 1999 by Blair’s Labour.Another great achievement was the Payment of MPs Act. Until 1910 M Ps had no income from government for being an MP and so it was generally only the wealthy gentlemen of leisure that could afford to live in London without having to work that had time for governance. This meant that the working classes had very little representation as they could simply not afford to be an MP. Attempts had been made throughout the 19th century to introduce payment for MPs but had never got through the commons yet in 1910 a vote of 265 to 173 in favour of payment of MPs (largely due to Labour pressure) passed through the Commons and Lords.This bill paid MPs ? 400 a year, which is more than most of the lower working class earned anyway and so meant many men could put themselves forward who normally would not have been able to. This led to the rise of the Labour party as they represented the working poor and therefore got their votes. It again was another act by the Liberals to introduce more representation to the governing of the United Kingdom; and this, arguably and ironically, led to their downfall. Their last act before the outbreak of the war was to pass the Third Irish Home Rule bill through the Commons and, due to the reduction of Lords power, the Lords.This is not a success although some view it was one as it almost leads to a division of the country and a civil war in Ireland. The John Carson set up the Ulster Volunteers to oppose any home rule law and had thousands of Ulsterman sign the Ulster Covenant where they agreed to oppose any home rule by any means necessary – they openly received support from the Conservatives and by the army as was seen at the Curragh mutiny where the army all resigned before they were ordered to attack the Ulstermen.They also managed to sneak 30000 rifles and ammunition into Ireland – they meant business. The Irish Voulunteers (who were the predecessor of the IRA) set up to oppose the Ulstermen and also gathered arms. Emergency talks were being held at Buckingham palace to resolve this issue bu t broke down and it looked live civil war and treason was inevitable, yet war broke out at the eleventh hour and the Liberals rectified the issue by sending the patriotic Ulster Volunteers straight to the Western front where they were mostly all killed on the frontline.Over the period of office leading up to the war the Conservatives did have the two main breakthroughs in that they brought about the payment of MPs and managed to defeat the Lords in several cases and ultimately managed to curb their power and this led to the modern democracy we still enjoy in the United Kingdom today and it is for these reasons that they were successful, they brought about the largest constitutional reform then we saw in the 20th century and it is unlikely that such reform will come about in our state again – unless we are to codify the constitution at some point or abolish the Lords entirely.

My role as a career is to provide personal and practical care services for people with a wide range of illnesses and disabilities, to assist service users with getting up in the morning and getting washed also helping them get undress also bathing and the toilet where necessary. To help service users with mobility problems and other physical disabilities, including Incontinence and help in use- and care of aids and Personal equipment. Set tables and trays, serve meals, and feed service users who need help, prepare light meals and wash up, and tidy and clear away. To read and write in log-book records and take part in staff and service users’ meetings and in training activities as directed. To conform to all policies, procedures and guidelines laid down by Trewcare in respect of carrying out these care duties and in other administrative aspects of the business, as Relevant. To be available to work, as and when is agreed with Trewcare giving where is possible, 24 hours’ notice of any cancellation. To carry out accurately in a competent manner, instructions from managers and Supervisors that adhering to the care plans of individual Service users. To actively talk- and listen to service users, allowing for their personal choice in their own Home. To ensure all home visits are for the time allowed, as scheduled and request the service User’s. To maintain accurate, concise, up-to-date and timely records of the service user’s care, Care plan folder, medication forms, financial transaction all in folder. To return all relevant paperwork to the office Where deemed necessary by the company. To document each visit in the daily log, detailing tasks undertaken, any changes which have occurred and other information relevant. My hours of work is variable by agreement according to the demands of the service with no guaranteed hours, I will be notified of hours by management. Any overpaid holiday pay will be deducted at the end of employment. Bank and public holidays do not apply. My entitlement to sick pay is as laid down by the statutory sick pay scheme. Under 1 month of service is to employee (me) is nil. 1 month of service or more is to employee is 4 weeks. My place of work is at Trewcare clients homes and there office. A disciplinary procedure applicable to me is I must adhere to the conditions of service and requirements as laid out in the employee’s handbook and company policies procedures. I acknowledge that I have received a statement of the particulars of my employment as required by s.1 ERA 1996 and I have confirmed my agreement that above terms contract of employment with Trewcare Limited. I sign and dated the contract and my employer. My pay slip must show: Gross pay – My full pay before any tax or National Insurance has been taken off the amounts of any deductions which change from payday to payday – variable deductions, for example tax and National Insurance, and what the deductions are for. The total amount of any fixed deductions – these are deductions which don’t change from payday to payday, for example union dues. An employer does not have to give details of what these deductions are for, as long as they give a separate statement with these details on at least once a year. The total amount of take-home pay after deductions, and the amount and method for any part payment of wage (for example separate figures of a cash payment and the balance credited to a bank account). My employer might include additional information on your pay slip which they are not required to provide, such as: National Insurance number, Tax code, Pay rate (either annual or hourly), and breakdown of additional payments like overtime, tips or bonuses, which must in any case be included in your gross pay figure. Change of name, Change of address and Change of bank details. I recognize that employees may from time to time have concerns, problems or complaints directly connected with their work and need to have a speedy,  fair, consistent and reliable for resolving these issues. My company’s grievance procedure, described below, aims to resolve problem areas quickly, fairly and objectively. The procedure is intended to reflect good employment practice and does not confer any contractual rights on employees. Procedure – It is in everyone’s best interest to ensure that employee grievances are dealt with quickly and fairly and at the lowest level possible at which the matter can be resolved. Informal Resolution – Most routine complaints and grievances are best resolved informally in discussion with the manager. Dealing with grievances in this way can often lead to a speedy and successful resolution of problems, and is recommended to all employees as the first option. Formal Procedure, Raising a formal grievance – If the informal approach does not resolve the matter, (or if the employee wishes to opt out of the informal option then the employee must put his/her grievance in writing to his/her immediate supervisor or manager, provided that he/she is not the subject of grievance. A simple form has been designed for this purpose. Employees with reading or language difficulties should seek assistance, for example, from a work colleague. Dealing with the grievance – Upon receipt by the company of a written grievance the employee will receive a written invitation, with at 3 calendar days’ notice, to attend a formal meeting to discuss the matter. An employee may request a postponement of the meeting, on account of a companion not being available, up to a maximum of 7 calendar days. If the employee has difficulty reading, or English is not their first language, the content of the invitation letter will be explained to them orally. The meeting will be arranged within 5 working days where possible, of the issue being raised, although certain circumstances, such as the need to collect information, etc., may make this difficult on occasion. Right to be accompanied – The employee will have the right to make a reasonable to be accompanied provided that the grievance concerns a duty owed by the employer to the employee. As such, this right is unlikely to apply in cases such as complaints about pay increases, quality of the refreshment. This right is, however, restricted to fellow worker, a trade union representative or an official employed by a trade union, and not someone acting in a representative capacity. A trade union represented who is not employed official must have been certified by their union as being competent to accompany a worker. Employees will be reminded of this right  prior to being invited to, and attending any meeting, and if they exercise this right, they shall be required to inform the agency of the name/status of the person who shall accompany them. No employee will be reprimanded or made to suffer harassment or punishment from anyone as a result of seeking resolution of a grievance through this procedure. Where a grievance is about the employee’s immediate supervisor or manager then the employee may go directly to the department head or director responsible for their area, or, if their immediate supervisor or manager holds such responsibility, to that person’s immediate manager, provided of course that such a person exists within the agency’s organizational structure. Records will be kept detailing the nature of the grievance, the response, any action taken and the reasons for it and whether there was an appeal, and if so, the outcome. These records will be kept confidential and retained in accordance with data Protection principles. An employer has a duty to ensure that data is being processed lawfully. Home workers may need specific training on their obligations and those of the employer in relation to data protection, the procedures which they must follow, and what is, and is not, an authorized use of data. Employees should understand when and how they are required to dispose of data they may create at home, for example; by requiring those to shred documents prior to disposal Employers should carry out an assessment of the data protection implications of employees working from home. Grievance – If you have a concern, problem or complaint at work, you might want to take this up with your employer. This is called raising a grievance. You might want to raise a grievance about things like; things you are being asked to do as part of your job, the terms and conditions of your employment contract, for example, your pay. The way you’re being treated at work, for example, if you’re not given a promotion when you think you should be discrimination at work. For example, you might think your work colleagues are bullying you because you because of your race, age, disability or sexuality. It may be possible to sort out your complaint by simply talking to your employer informally. However, it’s not always possible to sort out your complaint in this way and you may want to take out a formal grievance. You don’t have to take out a formal grievance. However, if you end up making a complaint to an employment  tribunal, the tribunal may reduce any compensation they award you if you didn’t raise a grievance first. Be respected and to be treated as an individu al. To be treated in a dignified way, to be treated equally and not discriminated against. Be aloud privacy and cared for in a way that meets our needs and takes account of preferences and choices. Safeguarded and protected from danger and harm. Allowed access of information about them and cared for in a way that meets the client’s needs. Given choices and promote independence to be treated as an individual We are all individuals and everyone has their own unique character and personality, which are developed through the different life experiences, cultures and beliefs we follow. It is also through other factors such as social class, age, ethnicity, culture, background and gender. It is important and essential to treat different people as individuals and to try and meet their needs rather than stereotyping people. E.g. all black people are the same. Treating everyone the same ‘regardless’ is failing to respect diversity. Treated in a dignified way we all want to be treated with dignity and it is a very important part of an individual’s life. Working in the health and social care profession it is important to help people maintain their dignity so they can keep their sense of self-respect and self-wo rth. All health and social care professionals should be sensitive and aware of the needs of people and service users especially during times when the body and its functions could be exposed. Legislation that relates to health and safety includes, amongst others, the Health and Safety at work Act 1974, Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and Health and Safety (Enforcing Authority) Regulations 1998. The general roles and responsibilities of health and safety policies and procedures agreed with my organisation for colleagues include, Having a personal and collective responsibility to promote safe working practices and maintain a healthy, safe and secure workplace and having a responsibility to ensure that they have an awareness of and comply with the organisations health and safety policy. Having an awareness of health and safety risks they face and the actions they should take to mitigate those risks. Ensuring that health and safety objectives, targets, processes and procedures are established and communicated throughout the organisation to all colleagues and ensure that clear accountability is established for health and safety throughout the  organisation. To take reasonable care of your own health and safety if possible avoid wearing jewellery so no spreading infections. To take reasonable care not to put other people – fellow employees and members of the public – at risk by what you do or don’t do in the course of your work and to co-operate with your employer, making sure you get proper training and you understand and follow the company’s health and safety policies and not to interfere with or misuse anything that’s been provided for your health, safety or welfare. Report any injuries, strains or illnesses you suffer as a result of doing your job (your employer may need to change the way you work). Tell your employer if something happens th at might affect your ability to work (e.g. becoming pregnant or suffering an injury) – your employer has a legal responsibility for your health and safety; they may need to suspend you while they find a solution to the problems. If you drive or operate machinery, to tell your employer if you take medication that makes you drowsy – they should temporarily move you to another job if they have one for you to do. Make the workplace safe and prevent risks to health, ensure that plant and machinery is safe to use, and that safe working practices are set up and followed make sure that all materials are handled, stored and used safely. Provide adequate first aid facilities. Train you about any potential hazards from the work you do, chemicals and other substances used by the firm, and give you information, instructions, training and supervision as needed and set up emergency plans also make sure that ventilation, temperature, lighting, and toilet, washing and rest facilities all meet health, safety and welfare requirements and check that the right work equipment is provided and is properly used and regularly maintained. Prevent or control exposure to substances that may damage your health and take precautions against the risks caused by flammable or explosive hazards, electrical equipment, noise and radiation also avoid potentially dangerous work involving manual handling and if it can’t be avoided, take precautions to reduce the risk of injury, provide health supervision as needed and provide protective clothing or equipment free of charge if risks can’t be removed or adequately controlled by any other means. Ensure that the right warning signs are provided and looked after and report certain accidents, injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences to either the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) or the local authority,  depending on the type of business. The main health and safety responsibilities of others include abiding by the health and safety policies of the organisation and various health and safety acts. Tasks that should not be carried out without special training include use of equipment, first aid, administering medication, health care procedures, and, food handling and preparation. In order to access additional support and information relating to health and safety I would refer to my line manager, the policies and procedures supplied by my organisation and access any government based websites. It is important to assess health and safety hazards posed by the work setting or by particular activities in order to prevent risk of injury to oneself, fellow colleagues and service use rs. I would report any potential health and safety risks that have been identified immediately to my line manager both verbally and by written report if necessary. Risk assessment can help address dilemmas between rights and health and safety concerns as the risk assessment will highlight a risk, therefore if there is any dilemma as to whether the client could carry out an activity, as they may be legally entitled to, there will be legal documentation to state that an employee has notified the client of the risks involved in that activity. An accident could be described as an unintentional incident which could possibly have an adverse effect on a person’s wellbeing, initiated from outside the human body, whereby there may be some initial warning. Some of these incidences can include a slip, trip, fall, burn or cut. A sudden illness can be described as an incident that occurs without warning, from within the human body, for example, a stroke or heart attack. If an accident or sudden illness occurs then policies and procedures to follow include making the situation safe if possible, treating my causality if possible, as I’m a first aider, reporting any accidents etc. that occur in the health and safety at work/accident book and reporting these to my supervisor or manager. In general I would follow all organisational and legal policies in place. The legislation that relates to moving and handling is the Health and Safety at work act 1974. It is important that all risk assessments are carried out on the individual or object beforehand. You must bend your knees and not your back, hold objects to your chest and do not lift anything above the weight that is specified by your employer. In my role as a volunteer at †¦ I lift items of very little weight except from time to time I will lift  tables in the setting up of the drop in which is always carried out by two people in order to evenly distribute the weight. Some hazardous substances and materials that may be found in the workplace may include electrical equipment, hot water, chemical substances hazardous to health, soiled linen, various detergents etc., needles and other residents and people. Hazardous substances should always be stored in their correct containers and should be clearly labelled. They should always be used only by people who are properly trained to use these substances and trained people should use these in the manner that they have been trained to use these substances, they should be disposed of in the correct manner and using correct storage containers that they are due to be disposed in. some practices that prevent fires from starting include not allowing rubbish and combustible waste to accumulate or bins to overflow, check electrical equipment and wiring regularly, not decanting or using flammable materials near a naked flame. Some practices that prevent fires from spreading include raising the alarm ASAP, not messi ng with firefighting equipment, never leave doors open or obstructed, only fighting the fire if it is safe to do so and following all organisational policies. Clear evacuation routes should be kept clear at all times because if these are blocked then a person’s route to safety may be blocked resulting in possible injury or death in the event of a fire. I would use agreed ways of working to check the identity of anyone requesting access to the work premises or information, by checking in any diaries available, or with line managers, anyone who has an appointment that day, as well as referring to all organisational and legal policies that may be in force. If I was in any doubt whatsoever, I would refuse access and refer any situation whereby an individual was requesting any access or information to my line manager. I would also treat the individual requesting access to premises and/or information with respect and telephone their employer to validate that they are who they say they are. It is important to ensure that others known their own whereabouts so that they know the nearest exit in case of a fire or some other emergency where the building had to be evacuated. Indicators and common signs of stress can include headaches, tense muscles, aches of body muscles, increase in smoking as well as reduced ability to concentrate and becoming irate. Some circumstances that tend to trigger my own stress include people contradicting me when I’m correct in  what I’m saying or doing and when people badmouth things or people I like or love. The ways I tend to manage my own stress include accepting what other people are saying or doing (whether they be right or wrong), taking myself out of the situation and talking to people who are not in the situation or have nothing to do with the situation. If I had a problem with a member of staff, for example if I didn’t like the way that they were treating a resident I would go to my manager and explain my concerns, if after informing my manager the problem persists I would then go back, if my manager dismissed this as she has already talked to the staff member, this would cause conflict and I would seek help from someone above my manager (Regional Director). Anti-discriminatory: Treat everyone as an individual and do no dis-respect race or culture. Health & Safety: Keep up to date with all training and comply with all requested of me to ensure myself, colleagues and residents are not at risk of harm or injury. Confidentiality: Ensure all information is secured properly and don’t give out any information to anyone you’re not sure about, consult Team Leader if unsure. Whistleblowing: Identify the unethical behavior in question and determine how it’s affecting you or the organization in which you work. There are many things that I do that contribute to the overall delivery of the service provider, for example I provide the best possible care I can give to the service users & families of those service users by communicating effectively & being involved in their day to day activities and personal needs I may also write their daily reports in deep detail. I read and sign all the service users care plans to ensure I can provide the correct and safest care. It is important to maintain my skills and keep up to date with my training and keep up to date with changes in legislation, the quality of care to the residents of the home by setting standards of care for the carers to work to and need to be client led-always giving the person you are looking after his/her own choice/decision over what he/she would like done for them. After all they are the employers really. So showing respect at all times coupled with privacy and dignity when bathing or assisting them in toilet routines. Knocking on doors and waiting before entering a room is a basic must. But  the ideal carer is one who gets pleasure out of being helpful rather than regarding his/her role as just a mere job. It follows that if a carer wants the clients to do as they are told rather than being given choices and respect, then their quality of life becomes miserable and they will dread that particular ‘so-called’ carer being around. Codes of Practice, Legislation dictates our level and quality of care. Government initiatives impact the people we serve. I am a direct care support professional in the field of caring for persons with multiple disabilities, including developmental disabilities. For example, a code of practice in action, and in a very general sense – may be staff supporting, but also providing the tools, for individuals to become more independent. Too much support, they would learn dependence. Tools alone without support, they may not understand how to use them or when to use them. Occupational Standards would be a general guide for each career within a given field that expresses the foundational do and don’ts for each. Example, we would provide a minimum amount of service, documented and within the guidelines for the individual, while if we offered additional services that are needed and appropriate to the individual that would be good. Laws protect for the most part. Most laws are based on safety. So legislation that offers greater protection for the people we serve, and laws that provide a clear expectation for staff – which if we follow judiciously, also protects us – are incorporated into all daily activities and decisions. We do not restrain. That is protection for the individual. A person passing by an accident and offering help is protected from lawsuits by the Good Samaritan Law. So in these examples, both the individual, and the care-giver have laws that protect them. Government Initiatives – well, that’s a pretty general term as well which could also be interpreted in many different ways. Initiatives – I think of entitlement programs. Social Security, SSI, Welfare, WIC, HEAP, HUD, etc., These programs – governmental initiatives – provide additional support to persons at or below the poverty level, to help them to have necessities. Some, not all, persons with disabilities, utilize these programs / initiatives, to assist with whatever they are unable to provide through their paid community employment. These national factors give you guidance, standards and rules to follow my work practice. Legislation tells me what I must/must not do. My role and responsibilities in respect of employment practices and present an issue of public concern that has occurred within either the health, social care people’s sector. Additionally, I will create a career plan which reflects on my continuing professional development and related learning and possible future qualification opportunities. Maybe look at how the special educational needs code of practice impacts on what I do or who I contact in my setting. Representational bodies are groups or organizations that guide or stand for the same thing that colleagues working in a Caring sector field. Care Quality Commission and General Social Care Council. Care Quality Commission: We are the regulator for all health and social care services in England. A regulator is an organization that checks services meet the government’s standards or rules about care. We check that people get good, safe care from: hospitals, dentists, ambulances, care homes and services that support them in their own home or in other places. We also look after the rights of people who need extra support to stay safe. This includes people who are kept in care under a law called the Mental Health Act. What we check: The government’s standards cover all areas of care. These rules are about things like: respecting people and treating them in the way we all expect to be treated and making sure people receive the food and drink they need. Giving people care in clean, safe buildings and managing services and having the right staff. We put care services on our register if they meet the standards, or act quickly if they do not. General Social Care Council: About the General Social Care Council (GSCC), The General Social Care Council is the social care workforce regulator for England. The GSCC is a Non Departmental Public Body established in October 2001 under the Care Standards Act 2000. It is sponsored by the Department of Health (DH) but also works closely with the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) in delivering the children’s and young people’s care agenda. The  GSCC works to improve the quality of social care services for the benefit of people who use services through regulation of the workforce and through its contribution to social work education. It has three main functions, It issues and distributes codes of practice for social care workers and their employers also it maintains the register of social care workers and it regulates social work education and training.
